Summer Reading is almost here! With fun, free programs and events across the county there is sure to be something for everyone this summer. Check back often as new programs are announced and get ready because this summer "Adventure Begins at your Library!"

Science-loving kids have three great opportunities to catch a hands-on program from Talewise this summer! For kids ages 5-13, visit the Strasburg Community Library on June 18 at 1:00 PM. For children ages 3-6, the New Market Area Library will be hosting a junior science lab on June 19 at 10:00 AM. Teens ages 12-17 will have a chance to try more advanced experiments at the County Library in Edinburg on June 19 at 1:00 PM (please note: registration is required for the Teen Lab only).

Join us at the County Library on Wednesday, June 19 at 1:00 pm as we host Science Lab, Talewise. Prepare for adventure as we explore and investigate various science concepts through hands-on, interactive and exciting experiments. This program is recommended for grades 5-12. Test your survival instincts without leaving the safety of the library! On Friday, June 21 at 4:30 PM, Ms. Erica will read a heart-stopping story of jungle adventure and it is up to the group to decide which path to follow. Make your case, cast your vote, and hope we make it to the end of the book alive! Due to the adventurous nature of the story, this program is recommended for ages 8-12. Play ball! Join us at the Baseball Field in Mt. Jackson Park on Saturday, June 22 at 10:00 am for an exciting children's program. The New Market Rebels will be coming to share stories and play ball! This program is sponsored by the Mt. Jackson Community Library.

Visit with Charlie the dog and his human, Tammy Ryan, on Tuesday, June 25 at 2:00 PM. Contact the Strasburg Community Library for more information.

Children are invited to join the New Market Area Library and the New Market Rebels for fun with books and baseball! The program will take place at Rebel Park (9670 Cadet Road) in New Market on Wednesday, June 26 at 10:00 AM. Contact the New Market Area Library for more information.

Join us at the County Library on Thursday, June 27 at 4:00 pm as we host a Super Smash Bros. Video Game Tournament, presented as part of our Teen Summer Reading Program. Trophies and gift cards will be awarded to finalists, and pizza will be served to all! Register in-person at the County Library or online by clicking here.

On Friday, June 28 at 2:00 PM we'll be showing the latest confectionary musical movie based on the classic book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We'll provide refreshments, kids may want to bring a pillow or blanket for stretching out on the floor. Contact the Shenandoah County Library for more information.

How well do you know your trees? Does a tree live forever? Is cutting down trees bad? Come find out the answers to these questions (and more!) at the Strasburg Community Library on Tuesday, July 2 at 2:00 PM. Kathleen Fish from the Virginia Department of Forestry will be sharing fascinating information about trees and provide some fun hands-on learning opportunities. Join us at the County Library on Tuesday, July 2 at 4:00 pm for a program combining science and art: Chalk Rockets! Using common household items, we’ll create a new form of explosive art! All supplies will be provided, and no registration is required. This program is presented as part of our Teen Summer Reading Program.

You have two opportunities to make some nature-based art at the Shenandoah County Library on Friday, July 5 at either 10:30 AM or 2:00 PM. We will provide all materials young artists will need to create their masterpieces! Please plan to attend only one session. Due to the use of small pieces and nature-based art materials, this program is recommended for ages 3+.

Try your hand at games of skill at the County Library on Tuesday, July 9 at 4:00 pm. Ring Toss, Giant Pong, and other carnival-style games will be available to play, with prizes awarded to the top finishers. No registration required! This program is presented as part of our Teen Summer Reading Program.

The New Market Area Library will host a children's program about bees on Wednesday, July 10 at 10:00 AM. The program is presented by Jo and Barb Hallar. Contact the New Market Area Library for more information.

Bollywood is coming to Shenandoah County on Friday, July 12! Dance instructors from Rhythmaya Dance in Northern Virginia will be sharing the history, traditions, and music of several styles of Indian dance. Catch the morning show at the Shenandoah County Library in Edinburg at 10:30 AM or enjoy an afternoon performance the same day at the Strasburg Community Library at 1:30 PM. 

Gifts Giving Back is a non-profit 501c3 literary arts organization that promotes reading by sponsoring a variety of year-round programs across the Shenandoah Valley. Come spend the afternoon with the Strasburg Community Library on Tuesday, July 16 at 2:00 PM reading and receiving. Contact the Strasburg Community Library for more information about this program.

The New Market Area Library will host an art program for children on Wednesday, July 17 at 10:00 AM. This program is presented by Dawn Murray. Contact the New Market Area Library for more information.

Join us at the County Library on Thursday, July 18 at 4:00 pm for a new approach to tie-dye: Water guns! Bring your own materials to decorate—or use ours—and create a one-of-a-kind piece. No registration is required for this program, and all supplies will be provided. This program is presented as part of our Teen Summer Reading Program.

Our good friends from the Bowman Library in Stephens City are back again this year with another wonderful storytime puppet show! This puppet troupe is comprised of teen volunteers and led by librarian, Donna Hughes. The puppeteers regularly perform at the Bowman Library story times where families can sing and dance along. Catch this amazing program at the Shenandoah County Library in Edinburg on Friday, July 19 at 10:30 AM. This program will likely appeal most to children ages 6 and younger, but all are welcome.

Captain Curiosity received rave reviews (and shrieks of laughter) last year when he took us all on a journey through the human body. This summer, Captain Curiosity is heading out...to outer space! Kids will be invited to lend a hand as Captain Curiosity teaches us about the universe, tries to fix his broken ship, and learns more about being true to himself in this interactive, comedic adventure. This program will be the most fun for ages 5+, but all children are welcome.

The Shenandoah County Library's magic show is going to be bigger than ever! Magician Wes Iseli always packs in a full house when he visits us so this year we're taking the show to the Charterhouse School Gym on Friday, August 2 at 5:00 PM for our finale celebration. You won't want to miss the opportunity to see the magician who fooled Penn & Teller on their own show and has even performed with them live in Las Vegas!
